Treatment Philosophies
12-Step
12-Step drug rehab programs have been in existence since the establishment of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) when they were originally developed to help recovering alcoholics after they returned home to society. These are the most common therapy recovery programs available if you are searching for a set of basic guidelines and principles that address the recovery phase of alcohol and drug addiction. 12-Step drug rehab programs are also effective for recovering from a variety of behavioral disorders and other compulsive behaviors.
There are 6 principles that 12-Step programs are based on according to the American Psychological Association (APA) which include:
- admitting that you are powerless to walk away from your addiction and stop your compulsive behavior
- employing the assistance of a sponsor to examine the mistakes you’ve made in the past
- interacting with supporting individuals like yourself who are recovering from an addiction
- learning new behavioral codes so that you can live a new, healthier lifestyle once you have returned home to society
- making amends for those past mistakes mentioned in point #2 above
- realizing that you can only get the strength you need from a higher power
After Drug Rehab – Aftercare Treatment
Any successful addiction treatment and recovery program has an aftercare network or access to one. These networks provide the additional support that addicted individuals need once they have completed the treatment phase and are entering the recovery phase. Without a doubt, drug rehab aftercare networks are the best support mechanism you can turn to at this point in time. It’s important to remember that once recovery begins, it never ends and you will be in this phase the rest of your life.
The most recognized support groups in society today are AA and NA. However, there are dozens of others to select from and the rehab center that you stayed in during treatment may have access to some that address your personal recovery needs. They may even have one on the premises. You will probably have to decide between a daytime or nighttime support group, depending on what your weekly career and family obligations entail. Read more on drug rehab aftercare.
Drug And Alcohol Detox
Without a doubt, the detoxification stage of drug rehab is the most unpleasant part of the addiction treatment and recovery process. However, in most cases, one cannot avoid undergoing this. It usually involves medically removing the substance toxins and any residues that are left behind once you have stopped using alcohol or drugs. Once detoxification is finished, the withdrawal symptoms will start which is the most painful and unpleasant part of this stage.
These withdrawal symptoms can be mild or they can be extremely severe depending on the depth of your addiction and how long it has been going on. During the withdrawal period you could experience any of all of the following symptoms:
- anxiety or panic attacks
- depression
- irritability
- nausea and vomiting
- seizures
- restlessness and sleeplessness
- substance cravings
The onset of these will take anywhere from 2 to 4 days. Depending on the individual’s metabolism and the severity of the addiction, these symptoms can last up to a week.
Dual Diagnosis Drug Rehab Centers
This condition involves having an alcohol or drug dependency in conjunction with a behavioral or mental disorder. When this is the case, it is referred to as dual diagnosis, which requires that the addiction and the disorder are treated simultaneously so that the individual can experience a total recovery in the process. The underlying disorders that are usually found with the addiction include:
- anxiety disorders
- behavioral disorders
- depression
- personality disorders
- schizophrenia
In numerous cases, we have discovered that these behavioral or mental issues are at the root of the addiction and function as the trigger that results in the individual drinking alcohol or taking drugs. Typically when the individual drinks or takes drugs, they only feel good temporarily. However, the cravings will eventually start again and the individual will consume alcohol or take drugs again without having the power to overcome their urges. A dual diagnosis drug rehab will not only address the addiction but also any underlying issues like depression, anxiety, and stress as well.
Holistic Drug And Alcohol Treatment
The underlying premise of any Holistic therapy is that the addicted individual is not just a number in a drug rehab facility. They are an individual that deserves the respect and treatment that other human beings do. The goal of all Holistic rehab programs is to enable the individual to become whole again by treating the body, mind, and soul. It functions as a viable alternative to the traditional rehab programs and the conventional therapies that they still rely on.
In holistic alcohol or drug rehab, the individual’s spiritual beliefs are always taken into consideration and they are never forced to accept other dogma that may be contradictory to their own. There is typically a variety of activities and other programs that are provided with Holistic rehab such as:
- yoga
- spiritual counseling and meditation
- spa treatments/therapy
- healthier dietary and nutritional changes
- equine therapy
- acupuncture or acupressure
In-patient Drug Treatment Centers
In-patient drug rehab programs require that the addicted individual move into the facility and take up residency while undergoing treatment and recovery. It also places them in a safe environment where they will not be confronted with potentially harmful situations on the outside. The homelike atmosphere that they are provided with offers a more personalized focus on recovery while also providing the individual with many of the same amenities that they have grown used to at home.
In-patient rehab programs typically witness much higher success rates where recovery is concerned compared to the traditional facilities or out-patient programs. They are highly structured and clients are continually supervised during the day and night in order to monitor their progress. Certain life skills courses and other educational materials are provided so that the client experiences a successful recovery. Upon returning home to society, they are able to live a substance-free lifestyle without the fear of relapsing. Statistically speaking, an inpatient drug rehab gives the addicted individual a much better chance of recovery than an outpatient program. Read more about inpatient drug rehab programs.
Long-term Addiction Recovery Programs
Long-Term alcohol and drug rehab programs address the personal needs of the addicted individual at the emotional, mental, physical, and even the spiritual levels. In some instances, there are behavioral and mental disorders that are uncovered during the treatment and recovery process. These disorders oftentimes act as triggers for the person’s addictive behavior. The long-term rehab program normally will address these issues once they are discovered.
Long-term drug rehab programs can last up to 4 months or longer, depending on the depth and severity of the individual’s addiction. Additionally, it has been proven that the long-term program is more effective and successful than other forms of addiction rehab. There are psychological as well as physical dependencies that need to be dealt with so the client is usually taught specific behavioral and social skills that will help them deal with the pressures and stress of everyday life once they return home.
Non 12-Step Treatment For Addictions
Not every addiction treatment and recovery center agrees with the philosophies that are promoted by 12-Step programs, so they have turned to the alternative non 12-Step therapies instead. The primary difference between the two is that the non 12-Step proponents do not believe that addiction is an addiction and the 12-Step programs are supplemented with religion. Not everyone agrees with this so the non 12-Step therapy has found its niche in the field of addiction rehab.
The client is provided with educational materials and other recovery tools that enable them to rebuild their self-confidence and self esteem during the recovery stage. Group and individual counseling sessions are also integrated into the non 12-Step rehab program as well just like with other programs. These sessions help to uncover the core issues that led to the person’s addiction. They participate in life skills and relapse prevention classes as well so that they are more confident in their new, substance-free lifestyle.
Residential Drug Rehab Centers
Addiction treatment and recovery programs witnessed a significant transition into a more modern, innovative form of rehab therapy when the alternative or residential facility came into being. Unlike the traditional facilities, the residential setting provides their clients with a comforting, less intimidating atmosphere to recover in, complete with apartment like environments and stocked with many of the amenities they grown used to at home.
Another significant benefit is that residential rehab programs have been proven to be more effective and successful in the long run where the recovery process is concerned. The client is able to focus completely on their recovery without worrying about encountering the potentially harmful situations they normally would in their home environment. So this type of rehab facility is a safe haven for the client to recover and relax in every day until they have completed the program and are ready to return to society.
Alternative Treatment For Drugs And Alcohol
There are two basic types of addiction treatment and recovery facilities – the traditional and the alternative rehab types. If the addicted individual is looking for a more viable option that provides them with a homelike environment and some of the amenities they have grown accustomed to, the alternative facility is the drug rehab of choice. Unlike the clinical or hospital appearance of the traditional facility, the alternative facility is far less intimidating and far more comforting.
The alternative addiction treatment and recovery center is a more personalized focus on recovering from addiction. Additionally, the alternative facility provides classes, group and individual counseling sessions, educational materials, and other recovery tools that the traditional usually does not. You will learn relapse prevention techniques and other life skills in your classes so that you never have to fear this once you have returned home.
Catholic Drug Treatment Programs
Catholic addiction treatment and recovery programs are geared to the individual who is looking for a faith-based type of rehab that follows the teachings of that particular religion. However, Catholic rehab programs still address the spiritual needs of the client and not just their emotional, mental, and physical needs just like other faith-based programs and unlike the traditional programs that still rely on conventional therapies. In so doing, they are able to supplement their recovery with scriptures and pastoral counseling.
By enrolling in this type of addiction treatment and recovery program, the individual is able to start walking their spiritual path again even though they are still recovering from their substance dependency. This also helps them to avoid relapsing back into their addiction as well as not fearing that this could happen again. You will be able to re-kindle your spiritual beliefs as you study biblical scripture and undergo pastoral counseling.
Christian Drug Rehab Centers
The underlying premise of any Christian drug rehab program requires that the addict places their faith in Jesus Christ. By doing this, you will be able to overcome your addiction and recovery successfully from it. You’ll be able to supplement the addiction treatment and recovery process with teachings from the Bible as you continue through the recovery process. Additionally, Christian-based drug rehab does not focus on a specific religion. It welcomes individuals from all creeds.
During this period of time in the Christian drug rehab, you’ll be encouraged and inspired to overcome your addiction and recover from it by focusing on your re-kindled faith as well as what you are learning in the program. Your beliefs are re-instilled through biblical scriptures, and pastoral counseling sessions. Once you have completed the program and leave the facility to return home, you will be living a healthier, substance-free lifestyle while once again walking your spiritual path.
Biophysical Drug Rehab
Many of the addiction treatment and recovery centers still utilize 12-Step programs that include specific religious elements. They also stress that addiction is a disease. Granted, that is one school of though where alcohol and drug addiction are concerned, however, there are no tests that prove alcoholism and drug addiction are diseases. The other school of thought believes that substance dependency is behavior that is learned and therefore can be unlearned. In a biophysical rehab, the treatment modality focuses on an educational model, essentially teaching a person coping and life skills.
As drug therapy rarely works, e.g. using Methadone and Suboxone to counteract the addiction. In other words, biophysical drug rehab programs do not believe that addiction is a disease or subscribe to the practice of using additional drugs as part of the treatment therapy. These rehabs are known for seeing that an addicted individual gets physically well so that they will experience a successful recovery and remain substance-free for life. It is becoming one of the more popular types of addiction treatment and recovery therapy today. In a biophysical drug rehab center, a cleansing process takes place that rids the body of drugs and alcohol. This is done in a natural way using light exercise, sauna therapy, and a healthy diet.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT has become an extremely popular form of addiction treatment and recovery therapy in the past decade. This particular therapy has been successful for treating behavioral disorders, cognition’s, and dysfunctional emotions by using systematic processes that are goal-oriented in nature. Anxiety disorders, depression, and a wide range of phobias are also treatable with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is now effective as a drug rehab therapy in many of those facilities.
The premise of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that our thoughts are typically what trigger our behavior patterns and emotions. It is not caused by other factors such as events, people, and places like we normally think they do. You can adjust your thinking despite the difficulty involved in changing the situation. In so doing, you will be able to change the way you think, feel, and behave. The primary goal of CBT is to teach the addicted individual how to recognize those “triggers” we’ve mentioned here.
Equine Therapy for Addiction
Equine therapy is a relatively new type of drug rehab therapy and teaches the addicted individual how to care for others and be responsible. It involves the caring for horses as a means to accomplish this and grow as a person. The combination of working with the animal and caring for them enables the individual to grow emotionally, mentally, physically, and even spiritually. As the therapy begins, the animal is like an empty art canvas with no pre-conceived notions or opinions about the individual caring for them.
The primary benefit that the addicted individual gains from the experience is that they are replacing their negative, addictive behavior with a positive activity. As the client progresses through the recovery stage using equine therapy, they now have something else to focus on besides the cravings they feel from their substance dependency. Equine therapy has been found to be extremely effective for treating cocaine, heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine, and prescription drug addictions.
Executive Drug And Alcohol Rehab Programs
One of the newer needs-based alcohol and drug rehab programs that is being used more and more all the time is executive addiction rehab. These were developed to satisfy the specific needs of the business person or corporate executive who has a different set of daily needs than what the average individual does. In this type of rehab, the individual is supplied with certain office amenities and equipment that they normally use in the corporate environment or workplace.
The executive drug rehab program typically provides the individual with the “tools of the trade”, so to speak which include:
- telephones
- internet connectivity
- filing cabinets
- desks and office chairs
- copy and/or fax machines
We feature alcohol and drug addiction treatment and recovery programs that can be customized to meet the demands and the personal needs of the corporate executive. Rest assured that your personal care will be placed in the hands of a certified and trained Drug Rehab professional while you are in residency here.
Faith-Based Rehabs
The right faith-based drug rehab facility and program will not only address your personal emotional, mental, and physical needs, you will also be able to meet your spiritual needs so that you can re-kindle your faith and begin walking your spiritual path again. Another positive factor with faith-based programs is that they are fairly “generic” in nature as they do not cling to a specific religious dogma and allow individuals from all faiths to participate in them.
However, the goals of faith-based rehab programs are to enable the individual to supplement their addiction treatment and recovery with scriptures from the Bible while they are learning to walk that spiritual path again. Your personal faith will always be respected and we will never attempt to coerce you into following a different one that is contrary to your own. Instead, we encourage and inspire you to focus more on your faith while you are undergoing the rehab process.
Gays and Lesbians Drug Rehabilitation Centers
One of the most overlooked communities and areas of substance dependency is the gay and lesbian community. This is another needs-based rehab program that arose because the traditional facilities neglected to address this particular community. The key reason that alcohol and drug rehab programs were developed is because substance addiction is much more prevalent in these communities than in heterosexual society. For the addicted gay or lesbian, the recovery process is considerably different as well.
As a result of the needs that the gay and lesbian community was facing, more and more alcohol and drug rehab facilities are now offering these types of addiction treatment and recovery programs. The client can now reside in a gay and lesbian friendly environment without the fear of recrimination about their lifestyle. For the suffering gay or lesbian addict, they now have a safe haven to reside in while they are overcoming their addictions and recovering from them.
Halfway House
These residential facilities were originally developed to accommodate recovering alcoholics and recently released inmates from prison. They are oftentimes referred to as sober living homes or transitional housing as they are the step that is taken in between the rehab facility and society. Today, it is more common to use the terminology sober living home instead of halfway house whenever alcohol or drug addiction is the topic due to the stigma that “halfway house” has the tendency to create.
When an individual leaves an alcohol or drug rehab facility, they may not always be ready to return home to their community because they lack confidence in their sobriety or substance-free lifestyle. The transitional residence enables the individual to gain the confidence they are lacking while learning certain relapse prevention techniques in the process before returning home to start their lives over. Additionally, many alcohol and drug rehab facilities have access to these facilities and can easily refer you into one..
Hospital In-Patient Substance Abuse Treatment Programs
Many addiction treatment and recovery centers programs are conducted at a hospital. These programs require that the addicted individual take up residency while they undergo the treatment and recovery stages of the rehab program. Hospital in-patient rehab programs can be either short-stay or long-stay, depending on the severity of the person’s addiction. The short-stay program will last from 14 to 28 days while the long-stay can last up to 4 months or longer. Either way, it is the most effective type of rehab program available today.
There are numerous hospital in-patient programs available as well. Addiction rehab programs have become very innovative over the past few decades while the traditional treatment and recovery programs continue to rely on older, conventional therapies. These are now considered ineffective and out of date. Conversely, the alternative rehab facilities offer programs that are more needs-oriented than what you find in the traditional centers.
For instance, there are hospital in-patient programs that are exclusively for men or women, executives, luxury and private rehab programs, faith-based and Holistic programs, 12-Step or non 12-Step programs and many more. The bottom line is that hospital in-patient rehab programs can be customized in order to address the personal needs of the individual who is reaching out for help.
Intensive Out-Patient Drug Treatment Programs
Although it is not quite as effective as in-patient rehab programs, intensive out-patient programs also have their place in the field of addiction treatment and recovery. These programs feature many of the same services that the in-patient programs do only without the added cost of residency. These programs were also developed to accommodate those individuals who are solely responsible for children at home and who are still pursuing their education or working a steady job during the week.
Another key advantage of intensive out-patient drug rehabs is that many of them are covered by a person’s health insurance policy. The following is a list of services that you will normally find in the intensive out-patient programs as well as the in-patient ones:
- recreational activities
- psychotherapy
- one-on-one counseling
- group and individual therapy sessions
- 12-step therapy
Another advantage is that the individual can conduct their daily lives without interruption and then return home to their families in the evenings as they always do.
Local Support Groups
One of the most important aspects of the addiction treatment and recovery process is the use of local support groups and the aftercare network that these are a part of. Local support groups are invaluable when it comes to furthering an individual’s recovery efforts. These are voluntary organizations comprised of individuals who all have the common goal of overcoming their addictions and recovering from them successfully so that they remain substance-free once they return home to society.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) are the best known local support groups out there. However, there are a number of others to choose from. Many of the alcohol and drug rehab facilities today offer referrals to local support groups or have access to ones tied into the facility. Local support groups teach the recovering individual certain coping skills and life skills including relapse prevention so they have a better chance of staying substance-free once they return home to their communities.
Where drug treatment and recovery is concerned, these local support groups play a key role in the aftercare process. Two common examples of local support groups are AA and NA, but there are dozens of others to choose from. One of the main benefits of attending a local support group is that you will be taught certain coping skills such as relapse prevention so that they can handle any potentially harmful situations on the outside once they return home to their community.
Luxury Drug Treatment Facilities
As the name implies, the luxury addiction rehab program is a high-end program that caters to the more affluent segment of society. This type of rehab facility focuses on the client’s comfort and their privacy which most of the other addiction treatment and recovery centers don’t do. These facilities are oftentimes referred to as private addiction rehab centers for this reason. They respect the fact that the client wants to maintain a low profile while at the same time receiving more personalized attention.
You will find that these residential facilities are oftentimes located in some very pristine areas that are situated in semi-remote locations such as at the beach, in forested environments, or mountainous settings. Additionally, the luxury rehab center provides those top quality amenities that the client has grown used to at home. It’s important to remember that the luxury rehab center is not for everyone based on the high-end nature of them and the financial aspects.
Intervention
This is a form of counseling in so many words. It is an organized attempt conducted by one person or a group of people with the assistance of an alcohol or drug addiction counselor to get professional help for an individual suffering with addiction. Interventions can be employed to address other disorders and problems besides alcohol or drug addiction such as:
- compulsive eating / eating disorders
- gambling addiction
- self-mutilation
- video game addiction
- work-aholic syndrome
Interventions are either direct or indirect in nature. Direct intervention typically involves a confrontation with the individual suffering with a substance dependency and is the most common form of intervention. Indirect intervention involves working with a co-dependent family and encouraging them to more effective when they attempt to help the addicted individual. Dr. Vernon Johnson implemented the use of interventions during the 1960’s and the concept has been used ever since.
Men Only Drug Rehab Centers
One of the alcohol and drug addiction rehab centers that have become increasingly more popular over the past couple of decades is the gender-specific model – those that are for men or women only. It’s no secret that men and women have different needs where substance dependency is concerned as well as different ways of treating the addiction and recovering from it. Men typically become addicted to a particular substance out of a need to fill a void in their lives.
Conversely, women typically become addicted because of traumatic experiences in their lives so as you can see, there are key differences between the two genders that have to be addressed. Gender specific rehab programs, such as those geared towards men only or women only address what triggered the addiction as well as the underlying emotional and mental factors involved. This is why they are usually more successful than the traditional types of rehab programs. Read more about men only drug rehab.
Methadone Maintenance
The drug methadone found its use for the treatment of heroin addiction but has other applications. It is referred to as a maintenance anti-addictive drug that individuals with opioid dependency are treated with. It has evolved into the treatment of any type of opioid addiction and typically involves the prolonged use of the drug as part of the detox and treatment process. Methadone has been effective for the treatment of chronic pain but its use is far more common where opioid dependency is the issue.
The primary benefit of methadone maintenance is that it decreases the cravings for heroin and other opiates by tricking the human brain into believing that heroin or some other opiate is present in their system. Additionally, the withdrawal symptoms that are normally present are significantly reduced and even eliminated occasionally during methadone maintenance, hence its popularity as a form of opioid dependency treatment.
MRT (Moral Reconation Therapy)
This particular rehab therapy is one of the more common ones in use today where addiction treatment and recovery is concerned. Over the past couple of decades, it has grown in popularity. Moral Reconation Therapy or MRT as it is more commonly referred to is a systematic type of therapeutic strategy that has been incorporated into many alcohol and drug rehab programs. The primary focus of MRT is the reduction or elimination of relapsing by juveniles and young adults.
MRT enhances behavioral, ego, moral, and social growth of the individual by increasing the ability to cope with the pressures and stress of everyday life situations and focusing on 7 basic treatment issues:
- reinforcing positive behavior and personal habits
- enhancing the self-concept
- developing higher stages of reasoning in moral fashion
- developing frustration tolerance
- decrease in hedonism
- confronting past beliefs
- assessing current relationships
Native American Drug Treatment Centers
Another one of the needs-based addiction treatment and recovery programs that became significant in the past decade was Native American rehab. It’s well documented that the Native American community and tribal nations have been ravaged by alcohol and drugs for decades. You can thank the Federal Government for that with the inequities and limitations that they have placed on the Native American community. Vanishing employment opportunities have resulted in substance abuse running rampant.
The Native American rehab program has become fairly common throughout many of the addiction treatment and recovery facilities over the past decade due to the issues mentioned in the above paragraph. The personal needs of the Native American are targeted whereas they are usually ignored or overlooked in the traditional facilities. The elements of hope, living, and tradition are the key components of the Native American rehab program hence their popularity among the tribal nations who are dealing with substance dependency.
Out-Patient Drug Rehab Centers
Out-patient rehab programs target those individuals who are not candidates for residential treatment and recovery programs. It is typically based on the inability of the client to afford the in-patient type of program. Many insurance companies will not provide policies that cover the residential programs whereas they oftentimes provide policies that cover out-patient rehab. Additionally, many employers now offer health care plans that included this coverage.
Most out-patient programs offer the same services that the in-patient programs do. The key difference is that you are allowed to return home in the evenings rather than being required to take up residence there. Out-patient programs were also designed and developed for individuals who are still pursuing their education, are working a steady job, or are the sole provider of children in the home. So as you can see, there are numerous benefits involved with out-patient rehab programs.
Day Treatment/Partial Hospitalization
The simplest way to define this particular type of rehab therapy is to compare it with entering a hospital early in the morning, undergoing an out-patient surgical procedure, and then being released to return home at the end of the day. This name of this rehab implies that you will check into the Day Care / Partial Hospitalization early in the day and then check out once you are finished for the day. Before you enter this type of rehab program, you have to have gone through detoxification.
You will receive the same attention and care that you normally would with any in-patient program in a Day Care / Partial Hospitalization program. During the time spent in the facility, you can expect to undergo the following:
- attend classes, complete homework assignments, and have educational materials provided to you
- have individual counseling or therapy sessions
- participate in group support and therapy sessions
Self-Help
As a part of the rehab process, certain addiction treatment and recovery centers offer self-help therapies as a part of the program so that they can follow their beliefs while undergoing the recovery process. These self-help programs are comprised of paths or “tracks as they are more commonly known, which are utilized in conjunction with other cognitive behavioral therapies that the client participates in while in residency at a residential or in-patient facility.
The tracks are comprised of very important elements such as support groups, recovery communities, and fellowships that supplement and enhance the recovery process. Other elements involved in the self-help program include:
- guided meditation sessions
- in-house recovery meetings
- lectures given by recovering alcoholics and drug addicts as well as counselors
- outside recovery meetings
These elements above are normally combined with or supplemented with personal inventory and self-discovery therapies to help the client uncover and discard certain aspects in their lives that were blocking their recovery in the past.
Seniors/older adults Drug Rehab Centers
One truth regarding substance dependency is that it does not play favorites and attacks individuals from all walks of life – older adults and seniors included. In many cases, the addictions that older adults and seniors succumb to, stem from the medications that their physicians prescribe. One of the more common substance dependencies stems from painkillers, a medication that is quite prevalent among the senior community.
Unfortunately, the older adult or senior is typically not aware of the fact that they are building up a tolerance for the medication and becoming dependent on it. Older adult / senior rehab programs are another specifically targeted program that has become fairly popular over the past couple of decades. Once again, as with other specific needs-based, the traditional addiction treatment and recovery facilities usually don’t address this group of individuals. They typically take a one-size-fits-all approach to addiction treatment and recovery therapies.
Short-Term Drug Rehab Centers
Whenever you are discussing in-patient or residential addiction treatment and recovery programs, there are two different types. On the one hand, there are the long-term programs that can last up to 4 months or longer, depending on the severity of the client’s addiction and there are the short-term drug rehab programs. The short-term programs will range in duration from 7 to 28 days, depending on the client’s requirements, and they still receive the same type of treatment.
The environment is residential in nature and the client is still provided with the same services and amenities of the long-term rehab programs. Although detoxification is a common stage in the long-term rehab program, this doesn’t always hold true in the short-term programs. Some follow the 12-Step philosophy while others take a non 12-Step approach to rehab therapy. The goal of these two programs remains the same – to see the client recover and live the rest of their life substance-free.
Sober Houses
Sober houses or sober living facilities evolved from the concept of the halfway house in order to address the needs of the recovering drug addict. They were developed in order to provide the individual with a transitional stage between the residential rehab facility and returning home to society. These facilities are ideal for the recovering alcoholic or drug addict that is not totally confident in their sobriety or substance-free lifestyle.
While in residency here, they are provided with additional support so they gain that confidence they are lacking while at the same time learning different relapse prevention techniques so that they avoid potentially harmful situations when they return home. They are taught a variety of coping mechanisms and other life skills that help them as well. Many recovered alcoholics and drug addicts claim that sober houses made the difference between staying substance-free or relapsing back into their addictions.
Wilderness Drug Rehab Centers
Wilderness rehab and therapy is relatively new in the field of addiction treatment and recovery. It is an adventure-based type of therapy that focuses on activities that are used in the exploration of the outdoors and wilderness areas as a form of therapeutic intervention. The two primary types of wilderness therapies are the “outward bound” approach and the survival approach. The goal is to improve the client’s self-reliance and their self-respect in the process.
Although wilderness therapy is a relatively new approach, it has caught on rapidly and has become extremely popular, especially among the teenage and young adult audience. However, older adults have participated in this therapy as well. Most participants have stated that the therapy was extremely beneficial, very enjoyable, and a positive experience. Wilderness therapy is recognized for teaching the client how to be assertive, independent, patient, and self-reliant while they are maturing from their experience at the same time. Read more about wilderness drug rehab programs.
Women Only Drug Rehab Centers
As with men only rehab programs, the women only treatment and recovery facility has found its niche in the rehab field. These programs exclusively address the personal needs of women suffering with substance dependencies. They developed as men only facilities did out of a need for more gender-specific addiction treatment and recovery programs. As was mentioned before, the needs of women vary greatly from the needs of men, especially where substance abuse rehab and recovery are concerned.
Additionally, there is a vast difference between the types of recovery therapies that are employed for women compared to those of men. Men develop substance dependencies to fill voids in their lives whereas women develop them because of their past family histories or traumatic experiences such as sexual or spousal abuse that they endured in the past. In any case, women require a more specialized approach than what men normally do in order to overcome their dependencies and recover from them.
